Dnes by se tato etapa neuskute\u010dnila, ale tehdy nebyla navzdory p\u0159edpov\u011bdi zru\u0161ena. Mo\u017en\u00e1 organiz\u00e1to\u0159i cht\u011bli televizn\u00ed show plnou bitev gladi\u00e1tor\u016f jako ve starov\u011bk\u00e9m \u0158\u00edm\u011b. Dal\u0161\u00edch 14 km stoup\u00e1 v pr\u016fm\u011bru o 8,5% a\u017e s 10% rampami a v roce 1988 se p\u0159idaly \u00faseky nezpevn\u011bn\u00e9 poln\u00ed cesty (na konci 90. let byla cesta \u00fapln\u011b zpevn\u011bn\u00e1).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P\u0159edpov\u011b\u010f po\u010das\u00ed byla tehdy spr\u00e1vn\u00e1. Na za\u010d\u00e1tku d\u00e9\u0161\u0165 a zima. Jezdci vy\u0161lapali nahoru a dol\u016f po Aprica. N\u011bkte\u0159\u00ed z nich po sestupu mrzli a vypadali, jako by vid\u011bli ducha. Na Gavia kr\u00e1tce po startu za\u010dalo sn\u011b\u017eit a na 2621 metr\u016f vysok\u00e9m vrcholu bylo je\u0161t\u011b chladn\u011bji a hust\u011b sn\u011b\u017eilo. Ten rok dos\u00e1hly teploty na vrcholu Cima Coppi -5 \u00b0. Hampsten \u0159ekl, \u017ee se c\u00edt\u00ed jako doma, kdy\u017e jezdil do \u0161koly ve sn\u011bhu po \u0161t\u011brkov\u00fdch cest\u00e1ch Colorada. Na vrchol dos\u00e1hl 47 sekund p\u0159ed<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> maglia rosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, italsk\u00fdm Francem Chiocciolim. Nejv\u011bt\u0161\u00ed v\u00fdhodou Ameri\u010dana nebyl n\u00e1skok p\u00e1r sekund, ale p\u0159edz\u00e1vodn\u00ed p\u0159\u00edprava t\u00fdmu. Ztratil 47 minut. Leader Franco Chioccioli dorazil b\u011bhem n\u00e1sleduj\u00edc\u00edch 5 minut. Olano vydr\u017eel a\u017e do Mortirola, kde nakonec podlehl gravitaci. S v\u00edce ne\u017e 70 kg nem\u011bl \u0161anci proti Rus\u016fm Tonkovovi a Ugrumovovi a Ital\u016fm Gottimu a Zainovi, kte\u0159\u00ed v\u00e1\u017eili jen n\u011bco m\u00e1lo p\u0159es 60 kg. Ztratil Giro, na t\u0159et\u00edm stupni v\u00edt\u011bz\u016f se dr\u017eel o pouh\u00e9 t\u0159i sekundy.
