Most of them require the use of specific pedals and that is what we are going to talk about in this article: different types of pedals, different pedal-cleat systems plus the pros and cons of each of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Types of bicycle pedals<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clipless pedals for 2, 3 and 4 bolts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flat pedals plus optional toe clips\/cages or straps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hybrid pedals and other flat pedal &amp; clipless combinations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clipless pedals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1276\" height=\"850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1276x850.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40163\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1276x850.jpeg 1276w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-640x426.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-768x511.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image.jpeg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1276px) 100vw, 1276px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Designed to be used with cycling shoes, which doesn&#8217;t mean that you can&#8217;t use them with normal shoes or sneakers; it would, however, be uncomfortable, unsafe and you\u2019d lose all the advantages provided by the combination of pedals + cycling shoes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More control and safety.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better power transfer.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More circular pedal stroke.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nv-cv-m wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have to buy specific shoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must practice clipping in and out quickly and on time in all circumstances.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the cleat or pedal is dirty, it is difficult to clip in and out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They require prior adjustment (of the cleat on the shoe and of the pedal itself) and minimal maintenance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flat pedals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1276\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1-1276x638.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40177\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1-1276x638.jpeg 1276w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1-640x320.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1-768x384.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-1.jpeg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1276px) 100vw, 1276px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Their greatest advantage is that they can be used with any type of normal shoe and with many casual commuter and off-road cycling shoes. They prevent the foot from sliding upwards or forwards and improve the power transfer when pedaling. They are not compatible with all types of flat pedals and, in the case of toe straps, some practice is needed to get the foot in and out; toe-clips do not require as much experience or skill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hybrid pedals and other flat pedal &amp; clipless combinations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1276\" height=\"868\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2-1276x868.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40191\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2-1276x868.jpeg 1276w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2-640x435.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2-768x522.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2.jpeg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1276px) 100vw, 1276px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>A combination of flat and clipless pedals based on a 2-bolt cleat system (SPD and Crankbrothers mostly) or flat pedals with magnetic cleats (Magped). Some models have a flat pedal on one side and clipless pedal on the other. There are also clipless pedals with large platforms that allow you to pedal comfortably with normal shoes or sneakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1100\" height=\"733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40219\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-4.jpeg 1100w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-4-640x426.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-4-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Their biggest advantage is their versatility, but they are not as efficient and light as clipless pedals, nor do they have as much grip as platform pedals. On the plus side, they are a good way to learn to clip in and out when making the switch to clipless pedals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pedal-cleat systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"509\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.siroko.com\/blog\/c\/app\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40233\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Within clipless and hybrid pedals there are different cleat-pedal systems and they can be grouped by discipline or by number of bolts. 2-bolt cleat systems can be used in both road and off-road cycling and, although 4- and 3-bolt cleat systems seem exclusive to road cycling, they can also be used for gravel discipline. Speedplay is the only system with a 4-bolt cleat design.
