A one-week stage race? A Grand Tour? A flat, hilly, mountain or time trial stage?

The type of race determines which riders are most likely to win and what kind of strategies you can expect to see.

2. What’s at stake?

As we’ve already seen in the guide, depending on the type of race, every rider has a specific role within the team, with clearly defined individual and team objectives.

In a Grand Tour stage, the general classification, a stage win, the mountains jersey or simply an opportunity to get into the breakaway may be at stake. In a classic, the objective is often much more straightforward: get into the day’s breakaway, anticipate an attack from the favorites, position the team leader and win the race.

If you’re watching a Grand Tour stage, check the standings on ProCyclingStats or FirstCycling and ask yourself: Who needs to gain time? Who has permission from the other teams to go up the road in the breakaway? Who can afford to wait? Who is only looking for the stage win?

That’s where the race starts to make sense.

3. Who is the leader of each team?

Identify the main favorites and find out who each team is working for.

A leader may be fighting for the general classification, a stage win or a classic. Around them, there will be domestiques whose job is to protect them, bring them water, control the race, chase attacks or set the pace.

When you see several riders from the same team working while one rider remains protected, you already know who their main card is.

4. What type of riders are you looking at?

Look at their strengths and characteristics.

A sprinter wants to reach the finish with the peloton together. A climber will be waiting for the mountains. A puncheur will look for a steep climb or an explosive finish. A classics specialist may try to break the race apart on the decisive sections. A rouleur will be crucial for chasing or controlling the race.

Not everyone attacks for the same reasons. A rider’s characteristics shape the way they race.

5. What is the peloton doing?

Don’t just watch the riders in the breakaway.

Ask yourself: Who is pulling in the peloton, and why?

If a team puts several riders on the front, they are probably controlling the gap or preparing something. If nobody wants to chase a breakaway, it may be because the riders up the road don’t pose a threat.

The peloton is making decisions too, even when it looks like nothing is happening.

6. Who is in the breakaway and how much time do they have?

A breakaway doesn’t necessarily mean those riders are going to win.

The important thing is to know who is up the road, how much time they have, and how much interest the peloton has in bringing them back.

In a mountain stage, a group of riders who pose no threat to the general classification may be allowed to gain several minutes. If there is a GC favorite or a dangerous rider for another team among them, the reaction will be very different.

On a flat stage, a breakaway may also build up several minutes, but the sprinters’ teams won’t let them get too far ahead. They will start working to keep the gap under control and avoid a surprise in the final kilometers.

The time gap is one of the most important numbers to keep an eye on throughout a race.

7. Where is the decisive point?

Look at the route.

It could be a mountain climb, a short steep ramp, a cobbled section, an exposed stretch where crosswinds can split the peloton, a technical descent, or simply the final kilometers through city streets, with roundabouts, street furniture and corners that can create tension before a sprint.

In many classics, the route is repeated or changes very little from one edition to another, so the decisive points are often the same. At Milan-San Remo, the Cipressa and Poggio; at the Tour of Flanders, the Oude Kwaremont…

Teams know these sections before the race starts and will usually try to arrive well positioned. So when you see the pace increase a few kilometers before a difficult section, it probably isn’t happening by chance. Teams are trying to move up the peloton and put their leader in the best possible position.

8. Why are some riders working while others aren’t?

This is one of the most important questions for understanding cycling.

A rider may be pulling at the front because their leader needs to bring back a breakaway. Another may refuse to work because they have a teammate in the breakaway, or because they are protecting their sprinter and don’t want to waste energy. A third rider may be saving their legs for a later attack on a climb.

A rider not working doesn’t mean they’re doing nothing. Sometimes, conserving energy is precisely their job.

9. What could happen in the final kilometers?

As the finish approaches, try to imagine the possible scenarios.

Will the breakaway survive? Will there be a mass sprint? Will one of the favorites attack? Will a smaller group form?

This is when teams start executing the plan they’ve been preparing for hours. In a sprint, you’ll see lead-out trains appear; in the mountains, domestiques will set the pace until the leaders are left on their own; in a classic, the favorites will look for the right moment to make the final selection.

The race can look calm for hours and change completely within minutes.

10. Why did this rider win?

This is the question you should ask yourself at the end.

Don’t just remember the winner’s name. Try to reconstruct the race.

Were they in the breakaway? Did their team control the peloton? Did they wait until the final climb? Did they attack when their rivals were tired? Did their team position them perfectly for the sprint?

When you start understanding why a rider won, rather than simply who won, you start watching cycling in a completely different way.

Because cycling is a sport where one rider crosses the finish line first, but the race is competed as a team. Pogačar is the cannibal of the 21st century and would probably win plenty of races in almost any team, but having riders around him who could be leaders in almost any other team has a huge influence on how the race unfolds and, ultimately, on the final result.

What if you still don’t understand everything?

That’s okay.

Professional cycling has decades of history, hundreds of races, complex tactics and a vocabulary of its own. Nobody needs to learn everything at once.

The important thing is to start recognizing the pieces: what race you’re watching, what’s at stake, who the leader is, who is working for them, which riders are in the breakaway and where the race could be decided.

With these ten keys, you can sit down in front of almost any race and start following its story.

Because that is, ultimately, the goal of this guide: not to turn you into an expert before you start watching cycling, but to give you the tools to enjoy it while you learn.

And from here on, every race will teach you something new.

You don’t need to know every UCI rule, memorize the entire racing calendar, or recognize all 180 riders in the peloton to start enjoying cycling.
