Surfing the South Island is a documentary following Canadian filmmaker Apolla Echino on a solo surf trip across New Zealand’s South Island during winter. Tired of seeing men have all the fun in adventure films, Apolla embarks on this journey as part of her documentary series A Woman’s Guide To The World. In the icy New Zealand waters, Apolla is often the only surfer in the sea, an experience she describes as both intimidating and exhilarating. Despite wearing a 5.5mm wetsuit, the cold was a constant challenge as she surfed every day and slept without electricity, facing freezing mornings before getting into the water.
